Heartburn, or acid reflux disease, is a feeling of burning in the lower chest accompanied by a sour or bitter taste in the mouth and throat. Heartburn can last for a few minutes or a few hours and generally takes place after eating a large meal or while lying down.
There are a few preventative measures you can take to lessen your heartburn including:
• Don’t over eat
• Raise the head of your bed by 4-6 inches
• Ensure that you eat at least 2-3 hours before lying down
• Avoid tight clothing
• Maintain a healthy weight, as being overweight can worsen heartburn
Many people take antacids to relieve their heartburn, however these products generally contain aluminium hydroxide which results in diarrhea and eventually neuro toxic effects of the brain and nervous system.
Instead of the pharmaceutical products try a healthy dose of bicarbonate of soda or a piece of white hard cheese – you will be surprised by the results and you will have no nasty side effects.
A few other recommendations for preventing and treating heartburn are:
1. As soon as you feel the heartburn begin drink a very large glass of water (this generally has great results)
2. Each day drink a glass of fresh celery or cabbage juice.
3. While having your meal sip 1 tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar mixed with a glass of water. This should be the only liquid you have with your meal.
4. Juice up a raw potato (including the skin) – mix the juice with an equal measure of water. The juice should be drunk immediately after preparing it and for best results should be taken 3 times a day.
5. Have smaller meals on a more regular basis and include as many fresh and raw vegetables as possible.
6. Fresh pineapple and papaya are well known fruits that can aid in digestion.
7. Uphold a regular gentle exercise routine, while avoiding weight lifting and running. For best results in managing your heartburn it is best to exercise before eating.
8. Avoid processed foods, caffeine products, carbonated drinks, fried foods, fats and sugars. Healthy raw fruit and vegetables are your best friend when it comes to avoiding heartburn.
9. Maintain a peaceful lifestyle, while avoiding stress and anger when ever possible.
10. Gingerroot is also worth trying as it has been shown to be very effective with managing heartburn.
So do yourself (and your body) a favor and stay away from the pre-packaged antacids – they may give you temporary relief but the long term effects are not worth the damage you can be doing to your body. There are a lot of natural heartburn remedies that you can put in place to relieve your discomfort and the results will be a happier and healthier you.

Chewing gum has helped me get rid of heartburn when no other alternatives were available. Chewing gum produces more saliva to neutralize acid and forces you to swallow more which forces acid back down. My doctor actually suggested it.
apple cider vinegar works wonders for me
I found the apple cider vinegar solution to be a good one. It’s also great for people who are getting on in age, to help them with proper digestion. Apple cider vinegar has got to be one of the best all-around home remedies solutions ever.
